Encyclopaedia of Social Work in India
About Encyclopaedia - It was in late ninetees of the First Millenium when the Chief Editor was the President of Association of School of Social Work in India (ASSWI), a demand was continuously raised by professional social workers individually as also through the forum of ASSWI, that the Third Edition of Encyclopaedia of Social Work in India be brought out at earliest because the Second Edition of the Encyclopaedia of Social Work in India was published by the PREM Division of the Ministry of Social Welfare in 1987 under the able and dynamic leadership of Prof. A.B. Bose, the them Director of PREM Division. As a consequence, the Chief Editor in his capacity of President, ASSWI prepared a proposal in consultation with Prof. Murli Desai of Tata Institute of Social Sciences and submitted the same for sanctioning and providing grant for the purpose. It was in 2003 that the sanction was communicated to the Chief Editor in the capacity of Director, J.K. Institute of Sociology and Human Relation, Lucknow University. Meanwhile, the Chief Editor was appointed the Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, a U.P. State University. The Chief Editor started his efforts to explore the competent contributors by sending letters to the Heads of the Departments of Social Work in various Universities, Directors of the Institutes of Social Work and Principals of Schools/Colleges of Social Work requesting them to circulate his letter among the staff members, with the request that they may opt for the area(s) in which they would like to make their contribution. When the Chief Editor received the reply, it was highly encouraging in the sense that some of the social work educators had opted to write in more than one area. The final selection of contributions and the areas in which they would write was made by the Chief Editor in collaboration with Late Prof. S.P. Srivastava, and final letters of request to write on the opted subject(s) were sent to the prospective contributors, specifying the date of 31st December, 2004 by which contributions must be sent. However, the response was very poor and by December, 2004, not even one contribution was received. The Chief Editor had no option but to give extension after extension until December, 2006 after which the term of Chief Editor as Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi was over and he returned back to Lucknow University as Professor of Social Work and Director, J.K. Institute of Sociology and Human Relations, It was after a great deal of persuasion that 127 contributions could be procured and after having been duly edited, were submitted to the PREM Division whose Director requested him to get 8 more contributions included and the Chief Editor saw to it that all these eight contributions in the suggested areas were received duly edited and submitted to the PREM Division by March 2007. However, the PREM Division quietly sat over the matter and did not give any information regarding publication of the sanctioned volumes. Then the Chief Editor got worried, met the Secretary, thrice, requested her to get the vetting done if she so deemed fit, and after that get it published failing which permission should be granted to get the Encyclopaedia's Third Edition brought out through some private publisher. After legal battle between the Principal Secretary and the Chief Editor, PREM Division requested the University of Lucknow to return back the entire money sanctioned with 8 per cent interest accrued there on.
The Chief Editor requested M/s New Royal Book Company, Lucknow and they very kindly agreed to publish. At the final stage there are 163 contributions on different dimensjons written by experts in various social science disciplines like Social Work, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, Geriatrics etc. and a few social work practitioners. The Chief Editor has personally read word by word all the contributions four times, and the Encyclopaedia's Third Edition is the outcome of hard labour, perseverance, sincerety, dedication and commitment to professional social work, and invaluable cooperation of the distinguished contributors.
