Sources on Awadh

About Book - This book contains a critical appreciation of 1316 primary and a list of 1176 secondary sources on the Nawabs and Kings of Awadh for the period 1722-1856. It thus covers 2492 sources. While the available primary sources are in Arabic, Hindi, English, French, Marathi, Nepali, Persian, Turkish and Urdu, the secondary works are in Arabic, Bengali, English, French, Hindi, Marathi, Persian and Urdu. However, most of the primary material is available in English, followed by in Persian, Urdu and Marathi. Primary sources in French, German, Hindi, Nepali, Arabic and Turkish are only a few. German and Turkish sources are available in a fully translated form but only a part of those in French, Marathi and Nepali have been translated into English. A substantial portion of the official documents of the Nawabs and Kings of Awadh are available in a copied or in a translated form in the British official documents. Some originals have also survived. Most of the Persian and Urdu chronicles are neither exhaustive in details and rich in accurate dates nor accounts of the eyewitnesses but these corroborate and substantiate the accounts of other sources. However, these suffer with an annoying monotony of the same material.
The book also contains an English translation of a rare Urdu booklet entitled "Allama Sitapuri" shedding light on the contributions of the Fort William College, Calcutta, to Urdu literature in a nutshell.
