Iqbal 1873-1938

About Book - The present book portrays an unaccustomed point of view and provokes independent thought. The main author submits his thesis to the cultured public of India as a critical tribute to the memory of the famous poet Dr Muhammad Iqbal, whom he studied at close quarters and had frequent social contacts with him observing the inner workings of his heart for 30 years. He tries to appraise his work and worth as a poet and thinker from the standpoint of a discriminating critic rather than of a personal friend as far as was possible for him to do so. The book deals with Iqbal's career, works, personality; religious, philosophical and political background, basic sentiments, Urdu and Persian poetry, philosophic theories, attitude towards Mysticism, his legacy and its future, comparison with Hali and Ghalib, interpretation of Islam; as a poet-philosopher and his popularity via-a-vis the cultural unity of India, patriotism, Indo-Muslim Renaissance and Humanism. It has thoroughly been edited by the well known historian Dr Hamid Afaq Qureshi with long expositions to balance the account and to present such aspects of Iqbal which are not generally taken into consideration while attempting a critical study of that great poet. The mingling of these two 'lights' in a single volume will be quite interesting and thought provoking to the readers as a whole. The original book had an exhaustive Bibliography, which has been retained, and an Index has been added to make it of more Utility.
